Youth Leader

Situated within the shared, unceded territory of the L?il?wat7úl (Li´l?wat People) and S?wx_wú7mesh (Squamish People), the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is a vibrant destination resort community, local government organization and leader in providing municipal programs, services, progressive planning and infrastructure. The RMOW is a high performance municipal organization and significant tourism economy serving a community of 14,000 permanent residents and over three million annual visitors. The Recreation department has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the casual position of Youth Leader. Reporting to the Whistler Youth Centre's (YC) Recreation Programmers, this position offers a variable schedule during YC operational hours of 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. / or 10:15 p.m. Thursdays – Saturdays. Ideal candidates would commit to a minimum of 2 consistent shifts bi-weekly with an option to work more when needed. Schedules are determined 2 weeks in advance, providing employees with ample time to manage their responsibilities effectively.

 

The Youth Leader’s role is to create, implement and facilitate drop-in activities and special events for youth aged 13 to 18. The Youth Leader will directly oversee the youth to ensure a safe, stimulating and positive space where youth can feel at ease and, will make meaningful referrals to various community resources (i.e. mental, sexual health & educational resources) as necessary.

 

Qualified candidates have a completed grade 12 diploma, possess a valid First Aid and CPR certificate, Food Safe certificate, and have at least 6 months of work experience in a similar role involving youth and youth programming. Qualified candidates demonstrate excellent verbal communication, mediation and listening skills with the ability to confidently apply rules and regulations when needed and to deal with behavioral matters such as bullying and teasing. Candidates should have the ability to coordinate, play, and participate in a variety of age-appropriate recreational activities. 

 

The successful candidate is youth focused, with a professional, approachable and helpful demeanor. They demonstrate the ability to be a leader and maintain confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy when dealing with confidential matters. They are committed to promoting a diverse, inclusive, safe space for youth, and across the organization. The starting wage for this position is $22.45 an hour.   

 

As a requirement of the position, the successful applicant must provide a satisfactory Police Information check for the vulnerable sector before starting employment.
