Unconscious biases are our social understandings based on unintended, subtle, and subconscious thoughts. Although we would like to believe that we are open-minded and without bias, research demonstrates that everyone holds unconscious beliefs about various social and identity groups. Biases derive from our experiences within social groups, including age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, social class, sexuality, and nationality.
In this introductory module, Prof. Brian Leacock will introduce common biases and how they shape our preferences and judgments about people’s abilities and potential. This engaging, high quality, and research based mini lecture will start your journey towards understanding unconscious bias - a critical precursor to inclusivity in a diverse organization.
Key Take-aways:
1. Understand what unconscious or hidden biases are and how they influence our thinking
2. Recognize how biases can shape workplaces and lead to workplace discrimination
3. Start to appreciate what it takes to build a diverse and inclusive culture
